Scenario Description: The invasion of Russia has begun! Dmitri Ivanovich, son of fabled ruler Ivan the Terrible, has the support of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth’s gentry and the tacit approval of Sigismund III Vasa and is marching westward toward Moscow to capture the throne of Muscovy.

Smaller detachments of troops are entering Russia from other locations to spread the word of Dmitri’s return and gather intelligence on Russian forces. Should Dmitri succeed in taking Moscow, many other cities could hold out or rebel against the new tsar. He needs to know what to expect. Your expedition left Dorpat, which the Poles captured from the Swedes a little over a year ago. Once in Muscovite territory, the group is to travel in the direction of Pskov and scout out the defenses along the way. As all are aware, the Sigismund III Vasa’s predecessor, Stephen Bathory tried to take Pskov about 20 years ago, but the citizens repulsed Bathory’s army over 30 times. Dmitri needs to know if the city’s been properly garrisoned, what state its defenses are in, and if it would welcome him as tsar.

It was a three-day trek from the border between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Russia to the shores of Lake Peipus. There have been no signs of any Russian military units other than a pair of cavalrymen seen from a distance. The heavy evergreen woods have made travel slow going. When the mission hears word of a village a half-day journey south-east along the lake, Gustaw z Radoma, commander of the expedition, ordered half the group to strike camp along the shore and the rest would press on to scout the village. He said he’d return in two days.

It’s been four.
